Illinois Association of Museums "The primary purpose of the Association is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and methods among member organizations in Illinois who share goals relating to preservation and interpretation of history, prehistory, natural and built environments, and social scientific, cultural and/or artistic endeavors." The Association's 2000 Annual Conference will be held on Oct. 25-27 in Mundelein, Illinois.
Illinois Heritage Association "...perpetuates the history and heritage of Illinois by providing professional services to educational institutions, local government bodies and nonprofit agencies."
Illinois Historic Preservation Association. "The mission of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is to collect, preserve, interpret and communicate the diverse heritage of Illinois and to educate the public by providing access to historic resources in the state."
Illinois State Genealogical Society (ISGS). Links to ISGS projects and quarterlies, as well as to other records and resources throughout Illinois including individual genealogical home pages that have an Illinois connection.
Association of Midwest Museums (formerly Midwest Museums Conference). "The mission of the Association of Midwest Museums (AMM) is to provide career development and networking opportunities to strengthen individuals in the profession and to serve as a regional forum for the exchange of information and new ideas to shape the future of museums." (The site is under construction.)
Museums of the Midwest. A compilation of links from the Michigan Historical Center. Includes museums in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
National Register of Historic Places. "Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archeological resources. Properties listed in the Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture."
National Register Information System (NRIS) can help you determine what sites are, nor are not, on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as learning about the process of submitting a site for inclusion on the Register.
American Association for State and Local History "... provides leadership, service, and support for its members, who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful in American Society."
American Association of Museums. "Through advocacy, professional education, information exchange, accreditation, and guidance on current professional standards of performance, AAM assists museum staff, boards, and volunteers across the country to better serve the public."
