Teaching Philosophy
On the role of content knowledge:
One cannot teach what one does not know. This simple yet true statement lies at
the heart of my teaching philosophy. For this reason, it is essential that
teachers continue to develop content knowledge at every opportunity. This
principle does not suggest that pedagogical knowledge is not valued, but even
the most seasoned guide can become disorientated in new surroundings.
On the role of modeling:
It is essential that teachers model best practice. This is accomplished by
staying abreast of current research trends. Then personally evaluating the
implications of the research in classroom situations to determine if the new
research or methods are of value in particular teaching situations.
On the role of technology:
Technology is not a fad in the classroom; it is an integral part of the future.
Therefore, teachers must not only tolerate new technology in the classroom, they
must learn to embrace it through the use of new pedagogues and revised
curriculums that enhance students' learning. NCTM continues to support this
position. "The appropriate use of technology tools is integral to the
learning and teaching of mathematics and to the assessment of mathematics
learning at all levels" (NCTM 1998).
