Voice Studio Requirements

¨        Each student is entitled to a minimum of 12 lessons each semester.  Currently semesters have 15-16 weeks plus Finals week.    I am an active performer and feel that this greatly enhances my teaching.  I will be away performing on occasion, and will give you plenty of notice.  I offer makeup lessons on several Fridays throughout the semester.  It is your responsibility to sign up for a makeup lesson.

¨        If I cancel or miss a lesson due to illness, bad weather, singing engagement, etc., I am obligated to reschedule the lesson at a time of mutual convenience.

¨        If I am required to cancel a lesson because of a university related event, I am not obligated to reschedule. (Advising Day, Univ. Holidays, etc.)

¨       If the student cancels or misses a lesson for any reason I am not obligated to reschedule. (Unless there is an emergency or extreme illness any cancellations must be made 24 hours ahead of time or it will count as an absence.)  One unexcused absence will count as an automatic lowering of your lesson grade by a minus. (ex: an A would become an A-)  Each unexcused absence after that will lower your grade further.

¨        If you are more than 10 minutes late your lesson will not take place and will count as an unexcused absence, unless there is an extreme illness or emergency.

Additional Requirements

¨        In addition to lessons students are required to attend and participate in masterclasses, Tuesdays at 2:00PM, unless there is a scheduling conflict

¨        Recital attendance is required for everyone taking applied lessons.  Music majors need to attend 14 recitals.  Music theatre majors need to attend 7.  Failure to attend the required amount of recitals will result in an ‘F’ for your recital attendance grade.  You are expected to attend voice area recitals.

¨        Depending on your major and year of study you have specific repertoire requirements and expectations.  I will discuss this with you individually.

¨       Everyone taking applied voice is required to do a jury at the end of the semester, unless you have given a graded recital in the latter half of the semester.

¨        You may be expected to purchase music.  Upperclassmen are responsible for selecting at least half of their repertoire, upon my approval.

Grading

¨        Regular Preparedness  (Lessons are not for you to learn notes.)

¨        Improvement through practice (Your lessons are merely a starting place for you.  You need to take what we do in lessons and bring these ideas to a practice room. )

¨        Attitude (If you are enthusiastic and willing to learn and try new things you will make both of our jobs easier. Plus it’s just more fun!)

¨        Attendance  (lessons, masterclasses voice area recitals, other required recitals)

¨        WOKING UP TO YOUR INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL

    All of the above:  (90%)

¨        Jury Performance   (10 %)

(If a graded recital is performed it will count as 20% of your grade).

¨        Your final assessment is truly a combination of your demonstration of technique, languages, artistry, and personal growth.  This is demonstrated through lessons, masterclasses, recitals, and juries.
