Part of Millikin University's mission
is to "prepare students for ... a personal life of meaning and value."
This part of the mission focuses beyond the classroom, beyond preparation for a
profession, beyond the purely academic, even while building on the idea that
education broadens your view on the world and shows you new ways to look at that
world.
Thus, the Cultural
Events Seminar has the following objectives.
To introduce you to the broad range of out-of-class cultural events that are
available to you, the Millikin student, on the Millikin campus
throughout the semester, for little or no money.
To introduce you to cultural events you might not have chosen to attend on
your own, for whatever reason, so as to expose you to something new, something
outside of your usual experience. The intent is that you will indeed chose
some events you would not have chosen if not for this class.
To lead you to ask yourself why, if that is the case, you might not have
chosen to attend a particular event. Were you reinforced in your prior
expectations or not?
To introduce you to something that in some ways, even if small, shifts the way
you look at or think about your own world. Did the course accomplish this?
You do not have to like every event you attend; but when you do not, you should
be able to have a reason more specific than "I didn't like it." That is, WHY
did you not like it?
In the reflection piece, you are expected to think about these course goals, and to
briefly discuss if and how the course did or did not meet these goals.
Also,
did the course meet YOUR goals? What were those goals?
Ultimately, the goal of this course is to tempt you to keep up this eclectic sampling of events after the conclusion
of the course and after your time at Millikin.
