Cultural Events Seminar: papers

Instructor: Associate Professor Karin Borei, University Librarian & Director of International Programs
kborei@mail.millikin.edu

To get credit for required papers, you must hand in each paper to Prof. Borei within 48 hours of the event you are writing about. ALL EXCEPTIONS MUST BE NEGOTIATED BEFOREHAND.

If a required paper about an event is late, you will receive no credit at all for that event:
not for attendance, not for the paper.

For each event you attend, you are to write a brief paper (one page, single-spaced).
There are several purposes for writing these papers about the events you attend.
To demonstrate, through original observations, that you did indeed attend the event, including that you stayed for the full length of any performance, talk etc.. No more than half of each paper should describe the event.

To show that you have given some thought to what you have just experienced, such as: what impressed you about it, or not? What if anything was unique about it relative to your own earlier experiences? Did it cause you to look at something in your life or your studies differently? And/or?

This is the more significant part of the paper, and may be more than half the paper if you wish, as long as it contains your original observations.

To give you practice in writing something short, yet interesting and carefully crafted. Do not bore me! But do not try to be overly clever either.

Paper specifics:
Each paper must be word processed and correctly written in standard English. Revise and proof-read carefully, please. Spell checking is important but not enough!

"Hand in": the paper should be sent to me as an email attachment (that is, not as the email message itself) at kborei@millikin.edu. Please remember to include your name on the paper, as well as the specific course requirement you are addressing with the event. Above all, remember that you are writing a formal paper, not just a casual note!

Late papers (handed in after more than 48 hours) will not be accepted.

“Unsatisfactory” papers are defined as not well written, superficial, or too short. Also unsatisfactory are reviews that are copied in whole or in part, from each other, from programs or brochures, or from anywhere else, because that is plagiarism.

Unsatisfactory papers will be returned to you once for revision and resubmission within another 48 hours. I will not accept papers that are unsatisfactory a second time, and you will not get credit for that event.
