History: The Cultural Events Seminar, an interdepartmental independent studies one-credit pass/fail course aimed at getting students to attend more cultural events at Millikin University, was taught (with a few exceptions) in both the fall and spring semesters from 1983 to 1998. Enrollment varied from semester to semester, topping 100 several times and averaging 70 per semester. No General Education credit was given. Students were (and still are) required to attend ten cultural events throughout the semester, including Kirkland events, faculty and student productions and recitals, and art exhibits. Some semesters the students were required to write short papers after some of the events, other semesters there were pre-event faculty/expert talks that were also compulsory, still other semesters featured both. Anecdotally, students found that they had to work harder during the course than they had maybe expected to, but that they appreciated the program. Advantages: students were exposed to a broad range of cultural experiences, and attendance at Millikin cultural events were increased. Recent semesters taught by Karin Borei:
