In the early years of the eighteen hundreds, the Napoleonic wars swept across Europe.  Germany was devastated and the people were starving.  The major purpose of the Grimm Brother's work was to provide the German people with a sense of their customs, beliefs, and history through a wide variety of fascinating tales thus uniting Germany.
