Response to Post 20:

In this post, Eric discussed the humor that is present in Startide Rising regarding the talking chimps and dolphins. I agree that he included subtle humor. I think that to really understand all that Brin is trying to convey one would have to read this novel several times. Since there are so many names, references, and little humorous lines, I think that to really obtain a full understanding of what the book needs one would have to complete several readings!! --Misty Dillow

In the book, Startide Rising, I think that the relationship between Sahot and Dennie is interesting. First, most would find it hard to believe that and interrelationship crush could exist between a dolphin and a human. That is actually going on behind understanding the fact that dolphins can talk, which alone is hard to understand. Sahot seems to flirt with Dennie, a human. I think that it is funny that a dolphin, who is close to many other dolphins, has a crush on a human. What is Brin trying to say about this? He seems to show odd relationships between the dolphins and the human, as in the relationship between Toshio and Keepiru, where Toshio is the butt of Keepiru's jokes. I think Brin is trying to show some creativity with these relationships to keep the reader interested. After all, everyone seems to like novels that have a little romance, I guess he wants to display this between a dolphin and a human. --Misty Dillow

Confusing, challenging, and strange are a few words I would use to describe the book, Startide Rising. Well, I guess that's just my way of saying that I didn't like it as much as the other books already read. My problems were:
  • the chapters were too short and those that wasn't short did not have any action (besides swimming around)
  • you had to constantly refer to the front of the book for names and species (which took some concentration out when you are into a particular section)
  • there were too many characters (where you wasn't sure who is what; meaning whose a human, from a ship, from a dolphin, from a soro
  • and the above then made it difficult to understand what were their intentions and what was going on during certain situation (first 2/3rds of the book) But, hey this is my opinion to the book. --Caroline Pauleon

    Response to Post 17:

At first I did think it was odd how Toshio and Keepiru would always act like they were not friends but they would be the first ons there if the other was in trouble. I think it goes back to the uplifting thing. I think they are both indebted to each other so even though they tease one another they both sort of owe each other something. I also think that they really are friends but they don't want to show it in front of the other so they put up a front about no liking each other. --Wendy Walton
