MT 406: Instrumental Conducting

Spring 2007

Objectives :

  • To increase proficiency with standard conducting patterns and gestures. (SOM Goal #1)
  • To develop score reading and study skills. (SOM Goal #1)
  • To conduct excerpts from significant instrumental pieces with a command of tempo and ensemble, and the ability to generate the expressive qualities desired. (SOM Goal #1)
  • To develop an understanding of instrumentation, transposition, and characteristic ranges of traditional band and orchestra instruments. (SOM Goal #1)
  • To be familiar with the musical vocabulary needed to interpret an instrumental score based on a thorough understanding of the historical and cultural context it comes from. (SOM Goal #2)
  • To begin to develop the skills necessary to plan and execute an effective rehearsal. (SOM Goal #3)
