Fear the Flamingo
What is it?
Starting October 2nd, in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Paula Stickles' IN140 class, as their service project, will be "flamingoing" campus members’ doors. A pink flamingo will be placed on a faculty, administrator, and/or staff members’ door and may only be removed by a certified person(s) for a $2 donation. The “flamingoed” person may then choose to whom the next flamingo is sent. Anyone who has been "flamingoed" may donate an extra $1 for insurance against being "re-flamingoed". All proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the local chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Update
Many people have questioned me about payment. The flamingo campaign has taken a little bit of a turn from the original plan as far as payment. Those that have been flamingoed will receive an email from my students. However, here are the possibilities in a nutshell.
-You can flamingo yourself for a cost of $2.
-Person A can flamingo Person B. Person A will pay $2 and person B will receive the flamingo and an email letting them know who flamingoed him/her.
-Person A can flamingo Person B anonymously. Person A will pay $2 and Person B will receive the flamingo and en email letting them know they were flamingoed by an anonymous colleague.
This sort of does away with the need for insurance. We decided that if 10 different people wanted to pay $2 each to send Person X a flamingo, then we were more than happy to take the $20 but didn't want Person X to feel inclined to pay $20 as well. However, we would be more than happy to take the money. I hope this clears up any confusion. Please contact me (pstickles@millikin.edu) if you have any questions or want to be flamingoed or flamingo someone else.
Update (10/6)
Starting October 9th, students can begin flamingoing each other. Monday (9th) through Thursday (12th) members of this class will sell flamingoes in lower Shilling from 10 to 2. Students can send a flamingo to their friends, roommate, RA, or just someone they see on a regular basis on campus. Students may purchase flamingoes for $1 each. Delivery of the flamingoes will begin middle to late in the week. Come support Breast Cancer Awareness month and flamingo away. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the local chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets are here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Update (10/19)
Less than a week until the "Fear the Flamingo" campaign is over. Thanks to all who have supported this adventure. You still have time to flamingo someone. Remember, faculty, staff, and administrators can send a flamingo for $2 and student cost to send one is $1. You can purchase flamingos in RTUC on the 18th from 5-7. Also, next week we will be back in Shilling from 10-2 on Monday (23rd) and 10-12:30 on Tuesday (24th). We also have Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets that you can pick up for $1 at any of those times. And, as always, you can always contact Dr. Stickles (pstickles@millikin.edu) for flamingoes or bracelets.
Update (December 2006)
Thank you to all who made this project such a success. My students had a great time as did I. We raised over $1100 for the local Susan G. Komen Foundation and we believe we raised the awareness level.
