Randy M. Brooks, Professor of English, received his Ph.D. from Purdue University with a concentration in rhetoric and professional writing. His areas of academic research include professional writing curriculum, rhetorical theory, hypermedia, web publishing, technical writing and computer aided publishing.

Dr. Brooks is the director of the writing major and has been an active proponent of experiential learning as a means of integrating theory and practice in the curriculum. He encourages Millikin students to apply their writing and rhetorical abilities by editing newsletters, creating web pages, publishing journals and books. He has been a literary editor and publisher of Brooks Books since 1976, and often invites students to participate in press activities.

He has been an active proponent of integrating service learning throughout the curriculum at Millikin, and has provided models of service learning through the writing major. Check out his complete curriculum vitae for more details. In 2006 he was promoted to Dean of Teaching and Learning.

Modern Haiku

Two online collections of my poetry was published in 1998 which you may wish to read at:

Black Ant's Journey to Japan (AHA Online Books: Gualala, CA, 1998)

In Her Blue Eyes: Jessica Poems (Brooks Books: Decatur, IL, 1998)

Dr. Brooks participates in a translation workshop at the Shiki Museum in Matsuyama, Japan. Conducted in a large tatami-mat room, this was the first time that he has presented a conference presentation on his knees.

Life Cycle

underwater skin
tight
too tight
to slip out of
with grace

veins pump
the gossamer
wings rise,
eyes fill with double skies

mouthless the mayflies
flutter to
make love
in midair

pressing rings
into the water
where
fish and other
devils
feed

the fertile
eggs float free
