I am a senior art major, working towards a Commercial Art BFA, emphasizing in drawing and graphic design. As a design major, I have extensive training with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark Xpress. Also, I have had some exposure to InDesign, animations/website design using Flash MX, and illustration. I have been able to take on two internships as a graphic designer working in Millikin’s Marketing and Media Relations Office and at Jones and Thomas, Inc. Both internships exposed me to the fast-paced design world, often requiring projects to be completed under rigid time constraints. I gained professional experience designing logos, brochure layouts, web banners, and craftsmanship skills by creating mock-ups for client approval.
As a BFA, I had the opportunity to take a broad range of studio courses and emphasize in another medium. I have experience working with photography, ceramics, metal sculpture, and figure drawing. I am currently in my fourth semester of figure drawing, in which I am working towards developing a series of drawings to exhibit in my senior art show this April. I have expanded my drawing skills by exploring new mediums such as charcoal, colored pencil, oil/chalk pastels, and acrylics.
After graduation, I hope to utilize the drawing and design skills I have gained to advance onto graduate school. I am now in the process of applying to graduate schools for Illustration in hopes to further study and launch a career as a children’s book or textbook illustrator.
Aside from career goals and professional experience, I have interest in music, writing, theatre, and film production. In my four years at Millikin, I branched out from my major as much as possible to explore new areas of study. I play the violin, and took a one-credit, introductory course to learn the guitar. I took introductory courses for creative writing, acting, and video production. As an artistic person, I found it valuable to explore all forms of expression outside of drawing and design to help fuel my creativity. My experiences have made me a well-rounded student, and hopefully this will help contribute to and benefit this course.
