The Car Wash

The lights on the sign
Lure people in,
Like a plane to an airstrip.
The crunch of gravel
Is drowned out
By the roar of the water.
All day, people come and go
And long into the night.
Outside my window,
I hear their voices
Laughing and calling to each other.
Until the whirling vacuum
Sweeps them away

Broken Promise

She runs to the mailbox
each and every day,
to look for the treasure
That her father was to send.
Each day brings despair and aggravation.
Patience is not a virtue
That was bestowed to her.
Each passing day
Brings her closer to forgetting.
Time is lost
And never to be returned.
Once again, she has been let down.
She will not let the hurt show,
So she returns to the mailbox,
Each day.
To seek the gift,
That will not be found.

Nine a.m. arrives and I go see the children.
They are all excited to see me.
Hugs and kisses all around
for those who care to receive one.
Some days it’s all I can do
to smile and carry on.
I really love my job,
but not where I’m at today.
And if I had a chance to leave
I’d take it in a flash.
But miss the children?
Yes, I would.
For would I receive
those hugs and kisses,
in the next place that I go?

The fight goes on
And the yelling continues.
Little children
With frightful eyes.
The screams and wails
Are heard through the night.
The sirens come
The wailing stops
The frightful eyes remain.

Driving down the road
Dark of night
Movement to the left
Out runs the deer
Boom

Green grass growing,
Birds singing songs
Sitting on the patio
Enjoying the day
Collecting my thoughts

Fashion plum walls
Now blue and brown
Weary arms holding the brush
Up, down, forward, back
Now the painting is done

Children laughing and playing
With excited faces
Learning ABC’s and 123’s
Pride showing
On the face of the teacher

Down the hill and across the bridge
Illumination from dashboard lights
Exhilaration building
Destination in sight
Home

In the dark
Thoughts in a frenzy
My love has gone
My heart is breaking
Wake up

Go through the house
One more time
Get everything tagged
Hang out the signs
Yard sale!

Clean the spark plug
Fix the hose
Add some gas
Pull on the cord
Ready-Set-Mow

Rocking chair
Sitting on the porch
Hot summer sun
Lilacs in the air
Memories of Grandma

Pink light rising
Gray is gone
Birds start chirping
People start moving
The day begins

Children sleeping
Soft, little snores
Eyes pop open
Lights come on
Nap is over

Open window
Door ajar
Breeze blowing through
Caressing our fevered skin
As we lay sleeping

Golden curls
Twinkling eyes
Angel in disguise
Oh, how I wonder
Where she is tonight

Wriggling worms
Power Rangers
Matchbox cars
Batman, Spiderman
Little boys

Feathery caress
Upon my cheek
Voices floating
On the whispering wind
I feel him
