Poet, journalist, biographer, autobiographer, songwriter, and folk song performer. Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois on January 6, 1878. He had to quit school young and do a variety of jobs to help support his family. He served in the Spanish American War for a short time then entered college at Lombard. He left there without a degree. Sandburg worked for a time as a journalist for such publications as the "Chicago Daily News" and the "System." He also dedicated some time to his political views by serving as secretary to the Socialist mayor of Milwaukee. Sandburg has published a variety of collections of poems and books such as Chicago Poems, Cornhuskers, Smoke and Steel, etc. He has also written biographies on Abraham Lincoln. He has won several awards like the Pulitzer prize for Abraham Lincoln: The War Years and Complete Poems. Sandburg also performed and collected folk songs. He composed two collections entitled The American Songbag and The New Songbag. Both were collections of folksongs. There are also several recodings that Sandburg has been the primary performer on as well as recordings that are strictly Sandburg's own lyrics and music. He died on July 22, 1967 at the age of 89. Sandburg was a working man's man. In all of his work he wanted to portray the reality of life through the everyday man.
