Teaching Experience

 1986-present

Assistant Professor of Psychology at Millikin University where responsibilities include teaching 12-13 credit hours per semester, advising of undergraduates, and departmental and committee assignments. In addition, taught a section of the University Orientation program each fall 1985-1990. Occasionally teach honors courses (e.g., social science honors seminar) for the James Millikin Scholars Honors program.

1984-1985 Instructor at Millikin University where responsibilities included teaching 12-13 credit hours per semester.
1978-1984 Research Assistant at Purdue University on federally funded animal research projects dealing with incentive contrast effects, instrumental blocking, counting, and serial pattern discrimination learning where responsibilities included developing research methodology, data collection and analysis, and the training and supervision of undergraduate research assistants.
1983 Graduate Instructor for undergraduate course Introduction to Learning at Purdue University where responsibilities included text selection, course design, lecture development, and testing.
1984 (Spring)

Psychology for undergraduates Spring 1984 where responsibilities included teaching a weekly lab in different areas of psychology illustrating the principles and problems in conducting experimental research.

Administrative Experience

1997-present

Chair of the Millikin University Human Participants Institutional Review Board (IRB) where responsibilities included rewriting the University's human participants policy, developing review request forms and instructions, creation of the IRB web homepage, as well as, assignment of research proposals for review, and record keeping for the IRB.

1993-present Coordinator of the Millikin University Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium (UGPS). Responsibilities include development of program guidelines, instructions to participants, and entry form, creation of the UGPS web homepage, creation of the long and short program of session participants, organization of the session, and management of the program and awards budget.
1995 Co-chaired the Ethics & Values Study Group with Dr. Ed Yonan. Responsibilities included organizing meetings,making presentations, and writing the draft and final study group report for the New Program of Student Learning with Dr. Yonan.
1994-1995 Chair of the Council on Global Issues where responsibilities included working with council members on program organization, working with University Relations on event publicity, grant writing for additional program support, management of a $9,000 budget, and nomination of speakers of the 1994 Fall Convocation and 1995 Moore Lecturer.
1989-1991 Writing consultant for the Social Sciences Division where responsibilities included developing and disseminating "writing to learn" activities, divisional programs implementing "writing to learn" activities, development of a writing to learn manual, writing a newsletter, and participation in the Writing in the Disciplines committee.

1996 (10/1) Presentation to the Illinois Department of Employment Security dealing with recognizing and avoiding harassing behaviors in the workplace -- Avoiding Sexual Harassment in Workplace Interactions - Appropriate Behavior Shouldn’t End Cordial Relations in the Office.
1994 Outside Institutional Reviewer on tenure case for a psychology faculty member at Beloit College.
1986 In-Service workshop for Planned Parenthood of Decatur, where responsibilities included the development of a questionnaire and direction of the workshop to improve staff interaction and communication.
1985-present Administering test batteries, and supervising standardized tests for American College Testing and Educational Testing Service. Regularly administer the ACT and occasionally the TOEFL. Have also acted as back-up test site supervisor for the ACT, SAT and TOEFL when regular site supervisor is unable to give the test.
1987-1993 Field Interviewer for the Institute of Survey Research at Temple University on National Institutes of Health projects of the National Survey of Families and Households and the National Child and Adolescent Survey where responsibilities included screening households and conducting structured interviews with eligible respondents. In 1993, acted as a field interviewer on the follow-up, National Survey of Family and Households - Wave II, using laptop computers and CAPI software to conduct personal interviews.
1990-1991 Field Interviewer for the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago on the Department of Labor's program evaluation on the original survey (1990) and follow-up (1991) of the Job Training Partnership program where responsibilities included locating respondents and conducting a structured interview. Received a monetary performance bonus for production and efficiency in case completion.
1986-1987 Research Design Consultant for Wright Co. where responsibilities included developing 3 research protocols; project control of one of the research protocols (involving training and supervising a research assistant, analyzing and writing the project report). This report was part of a data base submitted to the FDA as part of the product licensing process.
1985-1986 SYNDECO Exit Interviewer at Clinton Power Station where responsibilities included interviewing and writing technical reports regarding nuclear safety concerns of workers at the plant site
1977 Contract research technician at Trinity University on a doctoral dissertation on human serial pattern learning where responsibilities included scheduling and testing subjects.

Office of Institutional Research & Assessment of Millikin University Summer Grant to write and organize the documents that will begin the process of departmental program review during the 1999-2000 academic year.

Millikin S.L.A.D. Grant/Loan ($423.00) to assist with funding the Take Back the Night March co-sponsored by Growing Strong Sexual Assault Center (GSSAC). Part of the grant was used to purchase tee shirts that were sold as a fund raiser for GSSAC and publicity for the march.

Millikin S.L.A.D. Grant ($103.00) to assist with funding the Millikin Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium.

Illinois Campus Compact for Community Service Travel mini-grant - wrote and received grant ($130.51) to cover travel expenses to MACTOP conference to present service learning workshop. 

1998 Partnerships for Health & Higher Education Project (AAC & U Grant obtained by Deb Slayton - funded participant ($50) for incorporating AIDS material into Experimental and Introductory Psychology courses.
1998 Millikin S.L.A.D. Grant to assist with the funding of the Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium - wrote and received ($241.28) grant to partially cover the costs of the poster symposium operating budget.
1997 Mini-proposal for Summer NSF Grant #9653676 - Creating Linkage Through Institution-wide Reform of the Science Curriculum - applied and received summer stipend to work on a lab module for the new interdisciplinary science course in the New Program of Student Learning.
 1997 Small Faculty Grant to attend and participate in the 3rd International Conference on Enviornmental Enrichment - a 4-day conference focusing on ways to improve captive animal (zoo) habitat.
1996 CIC Summer Service Learning Faculty Fellowship. Wrote and received funding ($2,000) to work at Scovill Zoo, teaching Zoo Crew classes to 7th and 8th graders, and supervising a teaching intern and a research intern. Fellowship work at Scovill Zoo was performed to better understand zoo needs and develop a Lab for my Principles of Learning class, as well as develop an ongoing service learning program for college students at the zoo.
1995 JMS Creative Classroom Grant. Co-wrote grant with Dr. Ed Yonan, and received funding ($750) to develop JMS pilot course "Beliefs, Values and Moral Reasoning" to be taught Spring 1996.
 1995 Grant ($250) from the National Sciences Foundation, and the Program for the Study of Cultural Values & Ethics at the University of Illinois, College of Agriculture, Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine to participate in the weeklong ethics workshop at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
1994 Decatur Area Arts Council Grant. Wrote and received funding ($400) to bring MPAACT theartre group to Decatur.

Selected for paid participation ($250) in week-long bioethics workshop at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign sponsored by National Sciences Foundation, Program for the Study of Cultural Values and Ethics at the University of Illinois, and the Colleges of Agriculture, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.

  • Spent 3 days during spring break with Alternative Break helping to renovate a home for the Near Westside Restoration & Preservation Society for ultimate purchase by a low income family (1997, Spring).
  • Verry, D. R. Avoiding Sexual Harassment in Workplace Interactions - Appropriate Behavior Shouldn’t End Cordial Relations in the Office. A presentation to the Noon Optimists Club dealing with recognizing and avoiding sexually harassing behaviors in the workplace (10/29/96).
  • Verry, D. R. Behavioral Research with Primates at the Zoo. Presentation of two programs for 5th and 6th grade at-risk elementary school students enrolled in a summer school program - Summer Outreach ’96 sponsored by IASA Title I Grant - Helping Disadvantaged Children Meet High Standards (7/96).
  • Interviewed for article "At Our Own Risk" in Good Housekeeping magazine. Article dealt with the research conducted for the Wright Co., Decatur, IL, for FDA licensing of the Sensor Pad. Article cited my research, noting I am a professor at Millikin University (2/96).
